A Conversation With Candidate to County Council Maricé Morales

On Thursday, February 24th, we hosted a live conversation with Maricé Morales, candidate to County Council.

Maricé Morales was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, in 2014, as the first Latina to represent District 19 in Montgomery County. She was the youngest Latina in the United States to serve at the state level. She served as founding member and Vice-Chair of the Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus. She has authored legislation that we apply in our courts today.

During her time in Annapolis, Morales sponsored legislation to reform the criminal justice system, protect women in the workplace, immigrant communities, protect workers’ rights, and combat the rape culture in our country. She sat on the Judiciary Committee for her first two sessions where she worked on major criminal justice reform, including Justice Reinvestment, the elimination of mandatory minimums, bail reform, and police accountability. She was later assigned to the Health and Government Operations Committee, where she focused on insurance coverage, mental health issues, and reproductive justice.

Morales has been recognized by several organizations for her leadership on women’s and immigrant issues, and for her work as lead Sponsor of the Maryland Trust Act, which would have protected immigrant Marylanders from hateful anti-immigrant orders. She received the Governor’s Award for her work combating Human Trafficking; and was the recipient of the Outstanding Public Service Award in recognition of her contributions to the welfare of the Latino community through public service from several local organizations. Morales was recognized in 2019 as one of the top 100 Most Influential Latina Leaders in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia metropolitan area.

She is currently running for Montgomery County Council in District 6 with the support of Nancy Navarro, who is the incumbent and first ever Latina elected on the Council.
